arch_i3wm

Arch Linux - install i3

Assuming Lenovo X1 Carbon 2015…

  • Install xorg:
    pacman -S xorg-server xorg-server-utils xorg-xinit xorg-xclock xterm  xorg-fonts-100dpi
  • Install driver:
    $ lspci | grep -e VGA -e 3D
    00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Broadwell-U Integrated Graphics (rev 09)
    
    $ pacman -Ss xf86-video
    
    $ pacman -S xf86-video-intel
  • To work around a screen flicker bug:
    vi /etc/default/grub
    GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="i915.enable_ips=0"
    
    grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
  • Install libva:
    pacman -S libva-intel-driver libva
  • Install touchpad driver:
    pacman -S xf86-input-synaptics
  • Install i3 package group:
    pacman -S i3
  • Edit xinitrc and add i3:
    cp /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc ~/.xinitrc
    vi ~/.xinitrc
    # exec i3
  • Configure Xorg DPI:
    vi /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/90-monitor.conf
    
    Section "Monitor"
        Identifier             "<default monitor>"
        DisplaySize            309 174    # In millimeters
    EndSection
  • Install better terminal:
    pacman -S rxvt-unicode
